Aaron Burr, 3rd Veep, served from 1801-1805. He was the first of two VP's to shoot a man while in office (Dick Cheney the other).
Mr. Burr ran for President in 1800. The race vs. Adams and Jefferson was decided in the U.S. House on the 36th ballot. Burr, the second place finisher, immediately became vice president as Jefferson became President. Aaron Burr ran, and lost, in a race for Governor of New York in 1804 while a sitting Vice President. Burr challenged Alexander Hamilton to a duel on July 11, 1804, and assassinated Hamilton. Burr was never convicted of murder, merely indicted. Burr was also charged with treason after his term as VP, but also was never convicted. He served the remainder of his life in New York, practicing law.
